William Snyder Obituary

Gilboa – William L. Snyder, 89 of South Gilboa Road, died peacefully in the warmth of his home on Sunday, November 10, 2019.

Born October 27, 1930 in Grand Gorge to Mary (Erma) Yanson and Erwin Snyder, Bill grew up attending Gilboa and Grand Gorge central Schools and worked on his family’s farm, leaving school early to help his grandfather operate the bulldozer.

Bill worked as a truck driver for 15 years with McBride, Carmen and H.B. Moore before joining the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 106 in Albany in 1967 where he worked on the NYS Thruway, I-88 construction and the Blenheim-Gilboa Power Project, amongst others before retiring in 1993.

Never one to sit idle, Bill volunteered his time to the local fire department, Grand Gorge Hose Company #1, from the age of 18 and served as President for two years and loved joining the men’s Friday night Pitch games for many years.  He was also a member of the Gilboa Lodge #630 Free and Accepted Masons since 1967 and served as Master from 1976 to 1978.

Bill was an avid fisherman, enjoyed playing golf, a member of the Stamford Golf Club and catcher for the Grand Gorge softball team until he was 40, but no activity brought him as much joy as sharing love, laughter and life with his family.

Bill was predeceased by his loving wife, Maureen (Saupp) Snyder, his siblings: Audrey Case, Barbara (Robert)Schultz, Harold Snyder and Howard Snyder.

His loving family includes his son: William T. Snyder (Doreen Ferris) of Selma, NC, his daughters: Kyle Snyder Roof of Bainbridge, Mary (James) Wyckoff of Gilboa, Catherine LeBel of Gilboa; his companion of his golden years: Beatrice Mattice, of Gilboa; his sister: Chari (John) Standhart of Gilboa; his sister-in-law: Sharon Snyder of Gilboa; his grandchildren: Samantha (Jonathan) Strider, Kelsey Snyder, Mary Wagner, William Gerken, Howard Gerken, Donald Wyckoff, Joseph (Linda) Wyckoff, Alicia (Michael) VanZandt, Jennifer LeBel (Michael Speenburgh) David LeBel; his great-grandchildren: Kaylee Gransbury, Emily Wyckoff, Caleb Wyckoff, Kody Wyckoff, Olivia Grace VanZandt, Natalie VanZandt, Kiyonna Cunningham, Chase Speenburgh, Hunter LeBel, Layla LeBel.
