Huntersland – Walter W. Wissert, Sr., 92, of Huntersland Road, found eternal peace on Wednesday, March 4, 2020.
Walter was born in Queens, NY on November 24, 1927 to Susanna (Hebenstreib) and William R. Wissert. Walter served in the United States Army from 1952 – 1954 and devoted his life to helping others, young and old alike. A talented and skilled craftsman, he enjoyed woodworking and gave of himself and his time with numerous projects and gifts. He loved tinkering on his vehicles, visiting at the café with friends and volunteering as a member of the Huntersland Volunteer Fire Department. Walter also enjoyed cooking and baking for his favorite ladies at a number of local businesses. A “character” in the truest and warmest way, the glimmer in his eyes and his devilish smile bespoke his true demeanor.
Walter was predeceased by his beautiful wife and soulmate, Claudia (Walsh) Wissert, whom he married on June 26, 1960 and also by his daughter: Deborah Wissert, his son: William Wissert and his siblings: Clara, Irene and William.
His loving family includes his son: “Rusty” (Joan) Wissert of Middleburgh; grandchildren: Kelsey Wissert (Jarrod Clark) of Virginia Beach, VA, Kellen Wissert (Shaun Porter) of Middleburgh, Rachel (Brandon) Hess of Johnsonville, Travis Wissert of Middleburgh; siblings: Robert Wissert of Huntington, Joan Gambino of Palm Dessert, CA; daughter-in-law: Lisa Wissert of Gloversville and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
All are invited to visit with Walter’s family from 12:00-2:00PM on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at Coltrain Funeral Home, LLC, 134 River Street, Middleburgh. A reception will follow at the Huntersland Volunteer Fire Department, 1337 Huntersland Road, Middleburgh, NY. A graveside service, with Military Honors, will be held in the spring at Middleburgh Cemetery.
