Marie McCarthy Obituary

Marie E. McCarthy, 89, formerly of Hobe Sound, FL, passed away after a brief illness at the Loudonville Assisted Living Residence on August 2, 2021.

Born in New York City on April 18, 1932, Marie was the daughter of the late Louis Bafaro and Concetta (Orlando) Bafaro.  In 1951, she married the love of her life, George McCarthy and they celebrated 66 years together until George’s passing in 2017.

Marie worked as a bookkeeper at Nelson’s Auto Parts on Long Island until starting a family.  In 1967, Marie and George moved their family upstate to Middleburgh and purchased Parson’s Ford in Central Bridge, NY.   Marie served in several dealership office positions over the years and was a valued business partner with George.  In 1975, they expanded the dealership and opened McCarthy Ford & Mercury with a new building on Route 7 in Cobleskill - the first commercial business outside of the Village of Cobleskill. After selling the business, they enjoyed 30 plus years of retirement in sunny Florida.

In addition to her parents and husband, Marie was predeceased by her beloved brother Joseph Bafaro.

Marie is survived by her children: Kim (John Ostrander), Glen (Joyce), Scot (Deborah); grandchildren: Lance Ostrander (Megan), Grant Ostrander (Megan), Leigh Ostrander, Kyle McCarthy (Jacqueline), Daniel McCarthy, Benjamin McCarthy and Erin McCarthy; great grandchildren: Emil and Isaac Ostrander, Isla and Isabella McCarthy; her special sister-in-law: Clare Bafaro Silvestri and many nieces and nephews.

Marie’s heart was filled with love for her family, friends and home.  She was known by several names including Nun Nun, Chickie, Aunt Rie and Maria, but in the end they all meant the same thing, LOVE. Tradition was paramount, especially her weekly spaghetti nights and Feast of The Seven Fishes Dinner on Christmas Eve.  The table was always open to friends and family and those memories will be cherished forever.  She will be with us every day, in our minds, our hearts and in our souls.

Marie always had a special love for Middleburgh and its community members and gave back by being a long-term, active member of the Middleburgh Century Club.  Marie was also a communicant of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Middleburgh.

A private burial will be held beside her beloved George at the Saratoga National Cemetery. A memorial service for friends and family will be announced at a future date.

Contributions in Marie’s memory can be made to Community Hospice at CommunityHospice.org/donate or the Middleburgh Century Club, PO Box 715, Middleburgh, NY  12122
