George Van Wie, of State Route 30, passed away on June 15, 2023 at Ellis Hospital, with family at his side.
George was born on December 26, 1935, to Elva (Engle) and Frank Leslie Van Wie. Growing up, George lived and worked on the family farm. He graduated from Middleburgh Central School and then at General Electric, while also helping on the family farm.
George was happiest around his home, an avid gardener and sportsman. He enjoyed picking berries and wildflowers as much as fishing and hunting wild game. George also loved purchasing and showing off new cars and bought many over his lifetime.
Twenty-five years ago, George met and married his soulmate, Betty (Elizabeth Strevell Lockwood). In their early years together, they enjoyed picnics, riding bikes and swimming. Throughout their marriage they also enjoyed taking rides in the country in George's beautiful cars, visiting relatives and acquaintances with berries, or having breakfast with friends at a diner.
George is survived by his wife: Betty Van Wie; his son: Glen Van Wie and Glen's wife Cherrie Maxwell and their sons: Max and Jack of Elizabethtown, NY; his daughter: Karen Van Wie and her husband Renato Chiminelli and their daughter Karsen of Catskill, NY; sister: Nellie Eden of Avon, CT; many other nieces, nephews and relatives. George was predeceased by his brother; Claude Van Wie.
