Donald Robert Quinn, 90, family man, devout Catholic, athlete and renowned punster died Thursday, November 23, 2023 at Hospicare in Ithaca, NY.
The son of Wilbur and Genvieve Quinn, Don was born October 14, 1933 and raised in Catskill, NY. He graduated from Christian Brothers Academy and proudly served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-1958. He attended Sienna College and Niagara University, earning a degree in Mathematics with a focus on engineering math. His math professor career of nearly forty years began at Niagara University and then Orange County Community College. Don loved teaching and was highly regarded by former colleagues and students.
Don married the love of his life Joan Rowe Quinn in May, 1955. Both natives of Catskill, NY, they eventually moved into a large farmhouse located in Thompson Ridge, NY where they raised their eight children and were active members of St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Bullville, NY. As a retired couple, Don and Joan moved in 1998, to Schoharie, NY where he resided until August, 2011.
Don was a dedicated family man who shared his love of the outdoors including adventures in hiking or cross-country skiing the Catskill and Vermont mountains, family gardening, maple syrup making, honey harvesting, and actively participating in his spiritual community. Later in life, Don pursued writing including a collection of short stories, poetry and a self-published mystery. A quick wit, he also had a keen knack for making a personal connection whether it be a person or place.
Don is predeceased by his wife of 57 years, who passed in August, 2012 as well as his brother Charles Quinn in September 2020.
He is survived by his children: Sharon Quinn (John) Fitzgerald of Orono, ME; Kathleen Quinn-Jacobs (David) of Ithaca, NY; Thomas Quinn (Linda) of Colorado Springs, CO; Michael Quinn (Patricia) of West Berne, NY; Sheileagh Quinn of Calais, VT; Patricia Quinn of Marstons Mills, MA; Margaret Quinn of Warren, RI; and James Quinn (Devonna) of Ravena, NY. He was also a proud grandparent to twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
All are invited to visit with Don’s family on Sunday, December 3, 2023 from 3:00-5:00 PM at Coltrain Funeral Home, LLC 134 River Street, Middleburgh, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM on Monday, December 4, 2023 at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, Main Street, Middleburgh, NY with Father Thomas Zelker officiating. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Catskill, NY.
