Clifton Hubbard Obituary

Middleburgh -Clifton LaVerne Hubbard passed away peacefully at his home and went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 20, 2020.

Born in Gilboa, New York on February 23, 1934 to Clifton John and Frances (Barber) Hubbard, he was the oldest of eight children. He graduated from Gilboa–Conesville Central School, worked locally for a time after graduation and then joined the US Army in 1956. He served at a Nike Missile Base in Needham, Massachusetts. After military service, he returned to the area and began working at Timberland Industries in Stamford as a laborer, and worked his way to Plant Manager and later Vice-President of the successor company.

LaVerne married Roberta Renz in September, 1961. They resided in Gilboa and had two sons, John and Christopher. In 1975 he purchased the Robert S. Hoyt Insurance Agency in Grand Gorge, which later became the Hubbard Insurance Agency located in Grand Gorge and Middleburgh.

After losing Roberta in 1979, he married Flora Del Hallock in 1982. He became a stepfather to Karen, Kathy and Kim, and they added to his life. He always loved their company and musical talent. They in time became like his own daughters.

LaVerne sold the insurance business in 1995, and then enjoyed an active retirement. He was a private pilot and enjoyed flying his single engine airplanes. For many years he enjoyed his daily walks in all weathers to the top of Vrooman’s Nose. As a car collector, he won awards for his antique Fords, which he had personally restored. LaVerne was a devoted member of the Flat Creek Baptist Church for many years. Recently he was recognized as a 60 year member of the Gilboa Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed cross country motorcycle trips with Flora Del and their friends.

As a member of the Gilboa Historical Society, he recently researched and compiled a record of each Town of Gilboa resident who served in the military from the Revolutionary War to the present.

He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Roberta Renz Hubbard, and his brothers Douglas Hubbard and Wayne Hubbard. He is survived by his wife Flora Del Hubbard, his sons John Hubbard of Stamford and Christopher Hubbard (Jennifer) of Middleburgh, his step daughters Karen High (Keith) of Beaver, PA, Kathy Lanaro (John) of Grand Gorge, and Kimberly Weidner (Joseph) of Rising Sun, MD, and his grandson Dylan Weidner of Elkton, MD.

He is also survived by his siblings Marilyn Vonderheide of Beaumont, CA, Gerald Hubbard (Mary Ann) of Portland, OR, David Hubbard (Mary) of Altamont, NY, Carol Roberts (Jim) of Calicoon, NY, and Susan Ciacci (Larry) of Mathews, NC. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

His generous, loving and selfless manner will be missed by his family and friends. Responsibility to his family, community and country was a hallmark of his life.
