Gilboa – Carlton E. Lewis, 92, of Wyckoff Road, died Thursday, December 24, 2020 at Albany Medical Center following declining health.
Born on the family farm in Gilboa on July 14, 1928 to Mabel and Earl Lewis, Carlton grew up working on the homestead. A valuable member of his father’s team, along with his brother Alfred, Carlton learned the importance of “making hay while the sun shines” and the hard work it takes, cutting and pitching the hay along with tending to the animals on the farm. A dairyman for over 30 years, Carlton changed careers in the early 1970s, just as the dairy industry in the Catskills had fallen on hard times and the closing of the Blenheim Creamery spelled the end of an era. Like his passion for farming, Carlton honed his skills and became a master machinist and employee of Greno Industries for many years before retiring.
In his leisure, Carlton enjoyed turkey shoots and hunting and was an excellent marksman. He also enjoyed training and riding horses, loved animals and had many furry friends including cats and dogs over the years. He also enjoyed motorcycling and riding around the country side, along with teaching his granddaughters to fish in ponds at the farm and tending to his gardens.
Carlton was predeceased by two wives: Carol (ne’ Jenne) and Anne (ne’ Peters) and his brother: Alfred Lewis.
Loving him forever are his children: Jenne Carson (husband Matthew) of Pinehurst, NC, George Lewis of Gilboa, NY, Wayne Lewis of Gilboa, NY, Debra Lewis of Wildwood, FL, and Carla Reinhart; grandchildren: Theresa Little, of Troy, NY, Lauren Carson of Pinehurst, NC along with many other grandchildren and great-grandchild: Camden Handy, of Troy, NY
A graveside memorial service will be held at the family’s convenience in Gilboa Rural Cemetery. Coltrain Funeral Home, LLC, 134 River Street, Middleburgh is honored to be caring for Carlton and his family.
