Anastasia "Stasia" M. Hagan

Middleburgh - Anastasia (Stasia) M. Hagan, 94, of Middleburgh, died peacefully at her home in the early hours of Saturday, December 28, 2019, while being comforted by her daughter Katherine and granddaughter Natalie.

She was born in Manhattan on March 7,1925 to Amelia (Kuhn) and Bernard Ross.

Stasia married Edward Alvin Hagan, of White Plains, on June 26, 1948 and together were longtime residents of Middleburgh, since 1952. Stasia was a graduate of the Pratt Institute in New York and taught elementary art at Middleburgh Central School until she retired to raise her children in 1956. In later years she returned MCS where she taught Adult Education classes.

Throughout her lifetime, Stasia was highly active in many community organizations in Middleburgh and within the Catholic Church. She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, formerly St Catherine’s Catholic Church, for over 60 years. 

Because of her dedicated faith and interest in the church, Stasia generously supported Our Lady of the Valley and was an avid supporter of Bethany Ministries, as well as other church related organizations, both financially and spiritually.  She hosted the Bethany Ministries Ecumenical Centering Prayer Group in her home on Thursday evenings for many years.

Stasia was a successful and admired landscape painter in Schoharie Valley. Her paintings sold locally for more than forty years, many of which can still be found on the walls of popular businesses and private homes across the country.  She was also the founder and chairwoman of the Middleburgh Arts and Crafts show, which is still an active and well-loved event in Middleburgh each July.

Stasia was a decorated dispatcher of the Middleburgh Emergency Volunteer Ambulance Corps (MEVAC), a Cub Scout Den Mother during the 1960s and she and her husband were also co-chair members of the Bicentennial Committee for Middleburgh.

Stasia was also honored as the Middleburgh Golden Age Club’s Senior Citizen of the Year in 2010 and enjoyed riding in the Timothy Murphy Fall Festival parade that year.

Talented in many ways, her hobbies and interests not only included painting, but also basket-weaving, sewing, and gardening, Stasia had a beautiful demeanor, an equally lovely smile, positive attitude, a great sense of humor and was loved by many.

Stasia was predeceased by her husband, Edward Hagan, local high school art teacher, author, and historian.

Her family includes her daughters: Elizabeth Bechtel, Virginia Hagan, and Katherine Hagan and Katherine’s daughter: Natalie McIver; and Stasia’s son: William Hagan and his 3 surviving children: Stephen, Tracey and Matthew.

While no formal visitation is being held, Coltrain Funeral Home, LLC of Middleburgh is honored to be caring for Stasia and her family and extends the invitation to join them for a

Memorial Mass, in celebration of Stacia’s life, at 11AM on Thursday, January 2, 2020 at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, Main Street, Middleburgh. Spring interment will be at the family’s convenience in Middleburgh Cemetery.
