William Joseph McGovern Sr., 87, passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2026, in the comfort of his home under the care of his beloved family.

Bill was born on February 3, 1939, in Mount Holly, New Jersey, to Mary Catherine (Bradley) and Joseph Hugh McGovern Sr. He grew up in Riverton, New Jersey, until his teenage years, when his family moved to West Fulton, New York. Bill graduated from Middleburgh Central School in 1958, after which he began a life dedicated to service by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps.

Following his honorable discharge, Bill settled in Cobleskill, New York, where he continued giving back to his community as a trustee on the Village Board and a volunteer with the Cobleskill Fire Department. He served as captain and was a life member. It was there that he met Donna Angle. Bill and Donna married on September 21, 1968 - a decision he often recalled as the best of his life. Bill was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2695.

Bill worked for Ralston Purina delivering feed and for Mountain Dairy delivering milk. He and Smiley Thorington also worked for Robert A. Guffin, operating his private ambulance service. Through his relationship with Bob Guffin, Bill discovered his true calling. He pursued his education at the Simmons School of Embalming and Mortuary Science, graduating in 1972, and began his career as a licensed funeral director at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home.

Over the course of his career, Bill also worked for Mereness Funeral Home, Palmer and Shaylor Funeral Home, Ottman Funeral Home, Lappeus Funeral Home, and Langan Funeral Home. He took immense pride in his artistry and in comforting families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Later in life, he devoted his time to overseeing the daily operations of Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.

His greatest accomplishments, however, were his children and grandchildren. Along with his loving wife, Donna, Bill is survived by his children, Bill (Christine), Donna (Dale) Nunamann, Steven (Tara), Shawn (Carol), and Kathleen (Michael) Ellis; his grandchildren, Meghan, Caitlin, Aidan, Kiley, Keegan, Thomas, Mikaela, and Finley; his sister, Margaret McKay; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph Jr., Hugh, and James; his sister, Mary; his especially dear sister-in-law, Patricia; his nephew, Joseph III; his niece, Mary Theresa; and his in-laws, William, Margaret, and Paul Angle.

Calling hours will be from 5:00 - 8:00P.M. on Friday, August 21, 2026, at the Cobleskill Fire House, 610 East Main Street, Cobleskill. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00A.M. on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, Main Street, Middleburgh. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.

The family extends its sincere gratitude to Bill's caregivers, the Veterans Administration Home-Based Primary Care team, the Office for the Aging, and Helios Care for helping honor the family's wish that Bill remain at home.
