John P. McGuire, of Altamont, passed away peacefully on Wednesday May 15, 2024, surrounded by family.

John was born 78 years ago in Albany, NY and when he left high school, he joined the United States Army, where he served his country proudly for 21 years. John was stationed all over the world and fought in the Vietnam War. During his Army career his hard work and dedication to his country earned him the ranking of First Sergeant. He was a very well decorated officer holding over 15 medals, including a Purple Heart. He was last stationed in Fort Hood, TX before retiring.

He then moved back to Albany, NY where he started his career with CDTA as a Star Driver, retiring after 25 years. John loved driving the Star bus, meeting new people every day and building friendships and relationships along the way, including his wife of 21 years, Linda McGuire (Wendelen).

John was predeceased by his parents; James and Marion (Laraway) McGuire; his sisters: Barbara Carroll, Betty Halpin and Kathy Skorupski; his brother: Jim McGuire, as well as several nieces and nephews.

John is survived by his wife: Linda McGuire; sons: Brian McGuire (wife Suzanne, children Madalyn, Koslyn, and Issac), Christopher McGuire (wife Libby, sons: CJ, Eli, and Noah); son: Shawn McGuire; and daughter: Dale LaBelle-Dunscombe (husband Nick Dunscombe, children Bentley, Kaylee, and Jacob); sister: Judith Ganoe; brothers: Thomas McGuire and Rick McGuire.

When John wasn't working at the Guilderland Public Library, "Pop-Pops" loved spending all of his free time with his grandsons Bentley and Jacob. He was also a devoted fan of the New York Yankees and the Dallas Cowboys.

In keeping with John's wishes, all are invited to a committal service, with Military honors at 12:00PM on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at Gerald B.H. Solomon National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road Schuylerville, NY 12871.
