Obituary

James Mackey Smith, 65, of Middleburgh, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.

Jim was born in Cobleskill, on October 31, 1960, to Gail (Armlin) and Harold Smith. He grew up in Middleburgh, where he met his forever love, Tammy, when they were in high school. They were married in 1982 and shared 44 years of marriage, memories, laughter, challenges and love. Jim was the love of Tammy's life, and she was his.

Jim was a proud Operating Engineer and member of IUOE Local 158. He dedicated many years to the trade, running all kinds of construction equipment and cranes.

Nothing was more important to Jim than his family. He was always there for his two sons, James Smith, III and Mark Smith, whom he loved more than anything. He was incredibly proud of the men they became, and to them, he wasn’t just their father he was their hero. He was also a loving grandfather to his four grandchildren, who brought him tremendous joy.

Jim loved baseball and played league softball. He also had a lifelong passion for anything with wheels and a motor, and he always had a need for speed. His pride and joy was his 1969 Mustang Mach 1, which he owned from the age of 16 and spent a lifetime restoring to the perfection it is today. He also loved his classic Fords, his snowmobiles, ATV and his Harley-Davidson.

Jim treasured the many friendships he made throughout his life. His friends were an important part of his world and many wonderful memories were made along the way.

Jim will be remembered for his love of his family, his generous spirit, his friendships, his love of cars and machines, and most of all, for the love he gave to the people who meant the most to him.

He is survived by his beloved wife: Tammy; his sons: James Smith, III and Mark Smith; his cherished grandchildren: Ian, Jacklyn, Bradley and Brook; his sister: Sharon Smith and her husband Brian; and his brother: Tim Smith and his partner Gina; and Tim’s two daughters: Sharon and Chloe. He also leaves behind many other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

Jim’s sudden passing leaves an emptiness that cannot be filled. His family takes comfort in knowing how deeply loved he was, how many lives he touched throughout his 65 years and wish him peaceful rest, knowing he's forever loved, forever missed and never forgotten.

All are invited to a visitation with Jim's family from 1:00-3:00PM on Sunday, October 11, 2026 at Coltrain Funeral Home, LLC 134 River Street, Middleburgh, NY 12122. A Memorial service will be held at 3:00PM, following the visitation.
