Obituary

James F. Lovelace, a man of quiet strength, unwavering faith, and a brilliant scientific mind, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 29, 2026, in Niskayuna, NY, surrounded by the loving of his family. Born on July 14, 1939, in Geneva, NY, to Agnes (Gombash) and Floyd E. Lovelace, Jim’s life was defined by dedication, curiosity, and a profound kindness that echoed God’s love in every way.

A soft-spoken and humble gentleman, Jim carried himself with a gentle grace that touched all who knew him. A lifelong learner, Jim earned a Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering and was a self-taught physicist, blending formal education with an insatiable desire to explore and understand the world.

Jim’s career began at General Electric and later took him to the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, where his abilities earned the respect of colleagues near and far. A consummate tinkerer, he possessed a remarkable talent for fixing almost anything, a testament to a mind that never truly turned off, but only rested and recharged. From building his own telescope in high school to creating an outdoor observatory at his home, Jim’s passion for discovery and invention was evident throughout his life.

His personal career as husband and father began on August 13, 1960, when he married his high school sweetheart, Suzanne M. (Ward) Lovelace. Together they welcomed their children and many generations after, instilling their own love, devotion and faith through their family.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jim found joy in gardening, baking, and teaching himself to play the guitar, embracing creativity and patience alike, reflecting the patient, meticulous nature, a man who cherished both the beauty of the natural world and the simple pleasures of life.

Loving Jim forever are his children: Christopher J. Lovelace of Greenfield Center, NY, Elizabeth A. Ganey of Middlegrove, NY, Katherine J. LeFevre of Schenectady, NY, Laura J. Lovelace of Schenectady, NY, and Renee A. Davis of North Bennington, VT; his twenty grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and his cherished first great-great-granddaughter, Willow Rose Burns; many nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his wife Suzanne, his sister: Audrey Caughey, and his brother: Donald Lovelace

A visitation will be held on May 8, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM at Coltrain Funeral Home, LCC, 134 River St, Middleburgh, NY 12122. Interment will follow in Breakabeen Cemetery.

Jim's family requests memorial donations in his honor be sent to the Calvary Assembly of God, PO Box 145 Cobleskill, NY 12043
