Obituary

A gentleman is just that, a gentle man. A compassionate soul, a testament to kindness, a devotion to family, friends and community. An unwavering faith that guides and trusts and welcomes unconditionally. A smile and a laugh as warm as the summer breeze.

Edwin D. Guntert, of Middleburgh, is such a gentleman and was welcomed home to Heaven on Monday, June 1, 2026 from the loving care of his family.

Ed was born 86 years ago on February 18, 1940 in Stamford, NY to Jean (Wiltsie) and Ernest Guntert.

A man of intellect, Ed earned his Master's Degree and devoted his career to shaping young minds and guiding countless students at Middleburgh Central School as both a Business teacher and a Guidance Counselor before retiring in 1995. He was also a member of both the Schoharie County and New York State Teachers' Associations.

More than an educator, he emulated the meaning of volunteerism. He devoted countless hours and years with the Middleburgh Emergency Volunteer Ambulance Corps, offering comfort, aid and a calming presence when it was most needed. His compassion reached wider through his work with the Joshua Project and the Schoharie County Office For The Aging. He was also a long-time member and Treasurer of the Middleburgh Golden Age Club and a faithful communicant of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Middleburgh

A keen observer of life’s simple wonders, he cherished serene moments watching the birds from his kitchen window, particularly warmed by the delicate movements of hummingbirds. This gentle pastime mirrored his own nature. Quiet, attentive, and full of grace. Every moment too with his beautiful family equally warmed his soul.

Loving Ed forever are his wife: Jacqueline (Wood) Guntert, whom he married on June 29, 1963; his sons: Robert (Jackoi) Guntert and Michael (Marcia) Guntert; grandchildren: K-Lee (Justin) Cain, Matthew (Kendal) Guntert, Josh (Christine) Guntert; great-grandchildren: Silas, Caleb, Natalie, Harper, Tatum, Quinlynn and Kai; his sister: Marilyn (James) Bassani. Ed was predeceased by his brothers: Carl, Joseph and John Guntert.

All are invited to a visitation with Ed's family from 10:00 - 11:00AM on Wednesday, June 10, 2026 at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Middleburgh. A Mass will be celebrated at 11:00AM. Inurnment will be in the Middleburgh Cemetery.

Ed's personal request was that donations in his honor be sent to the Joshua Project, PO Box 413, Middleburgh, NY 12122
