Stephen and Elizabeth DeWitt Obituary

Middleburgh – Stephen Lee DeWitt, Sr. 73, of Middleburgh New York, found peace from the labors of earthly life on Thursday, October 17, 2019.

Born in Gerritsen Beach Brooklyn on April 16, 1946 to Claude and Mildred DeWitt, Stephen grew up being one of 9 children and learned the meaning of hard work early.

In 1962, Stephen joined the United States Army, created lasting memories, brought back great stories and mastered every potato he peeled. He was honorably discharged in 1965.

Working hard and long hours with the NYC DEP to provide for his family, he was forced to retire due to an injury. He was a carpenter in his younger years helping to construct many houses. He was also an amateur photographer and always seemed to capture moments and view life at many different angles.  He enjoyed the art of etching glass as well.

Once you met the “Mayor,” you never forgot him nor could you help but smile. With a tough first impression, followed by a smile, a twinkle in his eye and a handshake, you knew quickly his heart of gold was as precious as the gold jewelry he loved to wear. His heart was big and he loved deep. He was an angel sent down from heaven sent down to walk with us and remind us what love is and would generously give to anyone in need.

His heart beat strongest for his sweetheart and wife, Elizabeth, who predeceased him in 2017 and his son, Richard Martin Eugene DeWitt.

Loving him forever are his children: Joyce DeWitt, Janice Quadara, Jeanette Ramos and Stephen L. DeWitt, Jr.  His life and love are also cherished by his beloved grandchildren: Amanda, Alyssa, Anthony, Brianna, Cali, Christian, Savannah and Stephen, his son-in-law: Frank Quadara, his many siblings whom he loved deeply, and extended family members and friends.
