Middleburgh: Shirley Elaine Shafer, 88, of Clauverwie passed into her Lord’s care peacefully on Wednesday March 29, 2017 at her home, in the loving care of her family, caregivers and Hospice.

Shirley was born on January 13, 1929 in Seward, a daughter of Edith M. (Abrams) and Stanley J. Osterhout.

Shirley worked in the operating rooms at Cooperstown Hospital for many years but her true vocation was a loving and caring homemaker.

She opened her heart and her home to foster children, neighbors and her own nine children.  Her love also extended to animals, caring for countless stray and rescued pets.

In her free time, Shirley enjoyed camping, boating and tending to her flower beds.  Shirley also enjoyed being a member of the quilting club, volunteering at the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley and working as a dispatcher for MEVAC. 

Shirley was predeceased by her husbands: Kenneth C. Baird in 1982 and Willard D. Shafer in 2007 and also two sons; Kenneth D. Baird in 1987 and Terry M. Baird in 2009 and a step-daughter: Linda L. Shafer Young.

Shirley is survived by her children; Mary (Michael Bates) Baird of Oneonta , Pamela (Ronald) Pier of Milford, David (Laura) Baird of Esperance, Dennis (Brenda) Baird of Marietta, GA, Brian Baird of Middleburgh, Timothy Baird of Coventry, RI, Randy Baird of Ridge Manor, FL, Roger (Linda) Shafer of Central Bridge; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held privately, at the family’s convenience.   

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Coltrain Funeral Home of Middleburgh.
