Garret J Westerveld

Middleburgh - Garret John Westerveld, 77, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 21, 2018 surrounded by his loving family and his childhood best friend.

Garret was born on November 25, 1940 in Paterson, New Jersey to Walter and Anna (Winters) Westerveld.

He graduated from Ramsey High School in New Jersey and went on to serve in the United States Army from 1960 until his honorable discharge in 1962. He was employed by the state of New Jersey Department of Labor and then the United States Department of Labor OSHA until retiring in 2001, after serving for 25 years.

Garret spent much of his time enjoying and celebrating his two grandchildren Lindsey and Austin and proudly welcomed his first and only great-grandchild, Casen Daniel Standhart in April 2018.

Never losing his zest for adventure, Garret enjoyed all kinds with Ken, his childhood best friend of 71 years.  He also enjoyed spending time with his buddies at the shooting range, breakfasts at the Cobleskill Diner and playing the daily lottery.

Besides his parents, Garret was predeceased in 1993 by his wife, Margaret Westerveld, whom he married on October 5, 1991 and by his brother, Walter Westerveld.

His loving family includes his son: Todd (Kathy) Westerveld of Howes Cave; his grandchildren: Lindsey (Cody) Standhart of Middleburgh and Austin Westerveld of Howes Cave; and his great-grandchild: Casen Daniel Standhart of Middleburgh and his childhood best friend: Ken (Caroline) Stuhr, of North Palm Beach, FL. and many wonderful neighbors who were dear to Garret’s heart.

All are invited to a visitation with Garret’s family from 12PM to 2PM on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at Coltrain Funeral Home, LLC, 134 River Street, Middleburgh. A graveside memorial service, with Military Honors will be held at 2:45PM on Thursday, immediately following the visitation, at Bramanville Prospect Cemetery in Bramanville.
