Hobe Sound, FL - George J. McCarthy, 86, formerly of Middleburgh, passed away unexpectedly at home on Thursday, May 25, 2017.

Born in the Bronx, NY, George was the son of the late Joseph McCarthy and Irene Crotty.  In 1951 he married the love of his life, Marie Bafaro.

From 1952 through 1954 he served in the US Marine Corps.  Soon after, George began his automobile career as a mechanic at Plainview Ford and worked his way up to the position of General Manager.  In 1967 he purchased Parson’s Ford in Central Bridge and in 1975 opened a new Ford/Mercury dealership located in Cobleskill,  the first commercial business outside the eastern boundary of the Village of Cobleskill on Route 7, a true visionary pioneer.

In 1986 the dealership was sold and George enjoyed 31 years of retirement; playing tennis, working on his computer, traveling and enjoying time with family and friends.

George is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marie, his children, Kim (John Ostrander), Glen (Joyce), Scot (Debbie); grandchildren Lance Ostrander (Megan), Kyle McCarthy (Jacqueline), Daniel McCarthy, Grant Ostrander (Fiancée Megan Little), Leigh Ostrander, Benjamin McCarthy and Erin McCarthy; great grandchild Emil Ostrander, his sister, brothers and many nieces and nephews.

His life lessons of hard work, honesty, integrity and giving every job 100% were passed on to his family and friends. He leaves a legacy of love and memories that will last several lifetimes.

A celebration of life will be held from 5pm to 7pm on Thursday, June 22nd at Coltrain Funeral Home, LLC, 134 River Street, Middleburgh.  Interment, with Military Honors, will be at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery on Friday, June 23rd at 1pm.
